Description
In My Opinion…
Primary Social Domains: Perspective Taking, Conversation, and Self-Advocacy
Help learners build confidence, respectful communication, and flexible thinking with this engaging activity designed to teach how to recognize, express, and respond to differing opinions. Players practice first identifying whether they agree or disagree with a presented opinion statement, and then progress to the next level by sharing an alternate opinion when they disagree. This structured progression supports key skills in perspective taking, conversation expansion, and self-advocacy, all essential for successful peer interactions.
The activity includes 12 examples for each opinion type:
- “______ is the best.”
- “______ is (descriptor).”
These prompts help learners practice in a predictable, accessible format while still allowing for creativity, personal expression, and meaningful discussion.
To support successful participation for all learners in Grades 1 and up, the packet also includes:
- Visual supports to guide decision-making
- Text prompts to scaffold responses
- Active student response cards to increase engagement and ensure every player participates
These components reflect research-based instructional design, including active responding, explicit teaching of social-cognitive concepts, and scaffolded opportunities to practice flexible thinking and conversational reciprocity.
“In My Opinion…” is a core activity directly aligned with Mission Cognition’s Elementary Activity-Based Learning program, “The Big 10,” supporting component skills within Perspective Taking, Conversation, and Self-Advocacy.
A fun, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate way to help learners communicate respectfully, navigate differences, and contribute more confidently to social conversations, one opinion at a time.
