Description

Roll & Color Challenge

Primary Social Domains: Cooperation & Teamwork, and Flexible Thinking

Designed for: Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

The Roll & Color Challenge is not your typical color-by-number activity. Designed as an expansion activity for Mission Cognition’s Early Childhood Play-Based Social Learning (EC-PBSL) Program, this collaborative game targets cooperation, teamwork, flexible thinking, and group participation in a playful, low-pressure format.

Each player receives the same color-by-number sheet. On a player’s turn, they roll a die and then choose which color will be assigned to that number. The entire group follows along, coloring that number accordingly. Play continues until all numbers 1-6 have been claimed, resulting in final pictures that are similar, yet uniquely expressive. Non-numbered areas allow for additional creativity and personal choice.

Because outcomes are driven by dice rolls and group decisions, the activity naturally creates opportunities for:

  • Tolerating unexpected choices
  • Accepting others’ preferences
  • Making group decisions
  • Responding to peer requests
  • Participating in shared outcomes

Learners who present with rigidity may find this task challenging, which is precisely why it is so powerful. Visual supports and text prompts are included to scaffold flexible thinking, emotional regulation, and cooperative responding.

This activity reflects research-based best practices, including:

  • Activity-based learning to promote generalization
  • Guided peer interaction to support communication, turn-taking, and shared decision-making
  • Graduated exposure to unexpected changes, helping reduce rigidity
  • Structured choices to autonomy while supporting group cohesion
  • Active student responding, a core principle of effective instructional design

Appropriate for kindergarten through 2nd grade, the Roll & Color Challenge is an excellent activity for social groups, classrooms, and therapy sessions–designed to strengthen cooperation, reduce rigidity, and promote flexible, confident participation.

Fun, collaborative, and purposeful, the Roll & Color Challenge transforms a simple coloring page into a meaningful social learning experience.
